Portugal encompasses fires, 900 committed firefighters

Portugal is facing numerous fires that have swept the country. Four firefighters were injured while fighting fire, while one of them is in a worse position. More than 900 firemen with 300 vehicles have been engaged in the operation to extinguish the flames, while the Portuguese Army said it is sending additional reinforcements.
Portuguese authorities have also used helicopters and planes to fight the flames that began Saturday.
Strong winds were accelerating the spread of fires from the Castello Branco district, about 225 km northeast of Lisbon. One of the fires reportedly arrived in the Macao municipality, less than 50 miles [80 km] from the capital.
