The rivers are in the neighborhood of Wadi al-Hummus, in Sur Baher, on the outskirts of East Jerusalem. Homeowners said they had construction permits from the Palestinian Authority.
They are also on the Israeli side of the partition barrier, which the country built in 2002, when a campaign of suicide attacks by Palestinians peaked.
The Israeli army declared the area outside Israel's occupied East Jerusalem at the border of the West Coast a protection zone where construction is prohibited.
After a seven-year battle, Israel's Supreme Court ruled in June that Palestinian buildings were illegal. Despite Palestinian construction permits, owners also needed special permission from Israel. The three-member court said assault authors could use the coffee shop buildings, putting Israeli forces at risk, broadcast VoA.
Israel had given its inhabitants until Friday to destroy their own dwellings. About 700 Israeli police and 200 soldiers participated in the destruction action Monday, according to Interior Minister Gilad Erdan.
The United Nations said 17 Palestinians would be displaced from destruction and 350 would lose property. Most of the buildings were under construction.
Palestinians fear that Monday's destruction will create a precedent, paving the way for Israel to destroy 100 other buildings built under similar circumstances.
