In a report by the US Embassy in Belgrade, he reportedly spoke with the Serbian president about talks with Kosovo, achieving long-term peace and sustainability in the Balkans, and imposing justice on all victims of war in Kosovo.
The Serbian president, he said after the meeting that the key “is the continuation of the talks, how important it is for Serbian-Albanian relations and the stability of the entire region”.
He said it was also discussed in the case of the Bytyci brothers, three Albanian-Americans whose troops were found 18 years ago in a mass cemetery in Serbia.
The star, Agron and Mehmet Bytyci were members of the former Kosovo Liberation Army, respectively, of the Atlantic Battalion, composed of Albanians living in the United States, who joined the war in Kosovo.
In July 1999, they were arrested under circumstances unknown to Serbian forces near the border crossing between Kosovo and Serbia in Merdara.
A court in the town of Prokuples in Serbia had sentenced them to 15 days' removal on charges of, as told, the illegal crossing of the former Yugoslavia border.
Four days before the end of the sentence, they were taken from prison and sent to Petrovo Selo where they were killed in the vicinity. The troops were found in 2001 in a mass cemetery with stringed hands, among the many troops of Albanian civilians who had been sent there to try to hide traces of Serb forces' atrocities during the war in Kosovo.
Since 2006, two court processes have been held in connection with the Bytyci brothers' case against the two former Serbian police officers, who were later released.
American authorities have consistently demanded the enlightenment of this case and the putting of authors to justice from Belgrade.
A two-party delegation of American lawmakers asked the Serbian president in Munich this month to take action to resolve the issue.
Lawmaker Engel, after the visit to Belgrade, is expected to stay in the Presevo Valley, a majority Albanian region in southern Serbia and then in Kosovo where he will participate in manifestations with the United States independence day and the inauguration of the US Embassy building in Pristina.
He will also attend the inauguration ceremony of a street that will bear his name.
Engel is known as one of Albanians' great friends and powerful supporter of resolving the Kosovo issue.
