Joachim “El Chapo” Guzman has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in New York.
The 62-year-old was convicted in February of drug trafficking, following an 11-week trial. A large number of famous traffickers, cartel killers and girlfriends were brought before the jury to testify that Guzman was one of the most powerful drug lords the world has ever known.
His lawyers insisted that in fact the real leader of the cartel was his colleague, Ishmael Zambada Garcia, known as El Mayo, writes Periscopi.
He insisted El Mayo held real power, repeating that he paid the totally corrupt government in Mexico, including top officials like former Presidents Enrice Pena Nieto and Felipe Calderon.
Before he was convicted, Guzman complained about prison conditions and told the court that he had failed to have a fair court process.
He is now expected to be sent from Manhattan to the high-security prison in Colorado known as the most probate in the entire United States.
Guzman had managed to escape from prison twice before. /Periscope
