Turkey Sentences 17 Piquets to Life Prison

A Turkish court sentenced 24 people to life in prison Thursday in one of the largest trials held over the failed coup of the state of 2016.
According to Turkish news agency “Anadolu”, for 17 of the 24 defendants were given life sentences for each, in connection with the death of 139 people, for violating the constitution and trying to kill President Erdogan.
Among those sentenced is former Air Force Commander Akin Ozturk, as well as brother of the former Turkish ambassador to the Netherlands, Mehmet Disli. The atmosphere prior to making the decision was tense, with many people, mostly family members of those killed in July 2016, who had surrounded the court in impossible access.
The process began in May 2017 in the largest courtroom in the country, created within Sincan prison in the outskirts of Ankara's capital. The court also sentenced him to life imprisonment under the harsh former military adviser to President Erdogan.
Colonel Ali Yazic was also sentenced to 18 years in prison in an earlier process, again related to the coup of three years ago. Regarding the event, President Erdogan blames Muslim cleric living in America Fetullah Gylen, who is being tried in absentia.
