I apologize for all these times when we have mistreated you and when we have followed you. I apologize, in the name of the Church and of God, I apologize to you”, the Pope said.
The Roma have faced persecution throughout Europe for centuries. Hundreds of thousands of Roma are thought to have been killed during the Holocaust, Periscopi broadcast.
Nowadays, they live mainly in southern and central Europe and make up 10 percent of Romania's population.
“The industry fosters prejudice and promotes anger. Every time we easily judge with bad words we sow hatred and cause division”, the Pope said in the centre of Romania.
Roma complain they are forced to fight to find work, while many live in extreme poverty. /Periscopi
