In an interview for Euractive, he said the decision to open membership negotiations with Skopje could be postponed by September, as German Bundestag is expected to debate enlargement only after summer holidays. But it has shown concern that September may be too late, while the political context in the Balkans could change the following months and create new problems, Tch writes.
The biggest problem now, Pendarovski says, is the split from Albania.
This country is now troubled. We have had positive recommendations from the commission and earlier and we have been divided earlier”, he adds.
Northern Macedonia is expected to join NATO in December, or the first three months of next year, but its European perspective is still unclear.
While Pendarovski was in Brussels, Prime Minister Zaev spoke with Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin. This was our last attempt to get a date in June or July, but the problem is the Bundestag agenda. Everything remains for September.
