Reporting to the German Parliament on failed efforts last week to elect the new team that will reform the bloc in the coming years, Merkel said that a next summit on Sunday could result again in fruitless.
The “alone those represented by the European Council for the election of the European Commission president can enter the race and I do not decide alone at this point”, Merkel has indicated.
Merkel said she hoped the process, however, would respect the principle of the priority candidate, under which the party, which has received the most votes in the European elections, will have the first word for key posts, the TCH says.
The “Things are very complicated this time around so we have to keep looking for a solution”, Merkel said in her address.
The popular parties' favourite candidate is German Manfred Weber. But, French President Emmanuel Macron and other heavy loads in the EU say he does not have enough charisma for the post.
