International Day in Support of Torture Victims

This was an important step in the very necessary process in globalization of human rights and recognized that torture and all forms of mistreatment or inhuman or degrading punishment are absolutely and universally illegal.
In 1997 the United Nations General Assembly decided to mark this historic date, and it sets June 26th each year as the International Day of Support for Torture Victims.
Governments are reminded of their responsibilities to victims of torture, as described in the UN Convention.
Article 14 of the United Nations Convention against Torture specifically predicts that the United States should make compensation for survivors of torture, including the means for complete rehabilitation.
