Imam, 39, who is also a political refugee from Iran, was sentenced by the light crimes court this Monday. Another 29-year-old, from Senegal, was also convicted of assisting the imam and helping him. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
The news was announced after 70 people tried to cross the English Channel, which connects Britain and France on Sunday. Britain's interior secretary, Sayid Javid, has said this phenomenon is very disturbing, Euronews reports.
Jasid said that “under the rules of the European Union, an immigrant should seek asylum in the first country to be beaten, not attempting to go to other countries. Since January, 30 people have been through the ship illegally, from Europe to Britain”.
Imam, who was convicted, was not identified by the French media because of his safety.
His action was discovered through phone wiretapping. According to these observations, the people he helped to go to Britain had visited him several times in his mosque before performing the action.
Imam and 29-year-old from Senegal confessed all that they did, but claimed they did not know the move was against EU regulations.
