Ethiopian Army Chief Killed

He and another officer died trying to prevent a coup attempt against administration in the northern Ethiopian region, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said.

In Amhara, regional governor Ambachew Mclonne was killed along with an adviser.

Ethnic violence has hit Amhara and other regions in recent years.

Since his election last year, Abiy has worked in order to end political oppression by releasing political prisoners, removing bans on political parties and prosecuting officials accused of human rights abuse.
