US Secretary of Military Mark Esper, who came to Kosovo in recent days, has met with US Ambassador to Kosovo Philip Costett at a closed meeting for the public before making a stop at NATO camp in Bondsteel.
He said the focus during this trip is to get information from soldiers more than to dig into the tense political situation in the country, reports “marysboring”.
During the tour held at Bondsteel military base, Esper was briefly announced about the mission by soldiers and spoke of recent developments in military training for deployments.
Esper says that after meeting with US military troops in Kosovo, he has realised that their enthusiasm is high, Time.net broadcasts.
The American Colonel, Roy Macarae, who will soon complete the mission in Kosovo, has said that the situation is calm and very secure on the ground, but said that <x0-tensions come from the political level”.
Tensions between Kosovo and Serbia have risen again recently when Serbian troops were invited to be in a state of readiness at the border after Kosovo special police arrested several Albanian and Serbian police and customs officers accused of corruption. Tensions with Russia also arose after Kosovo arrested him and later declared him a former “grata” to a Russian national working for UNMIK.
There's a lot of players on the ground here... underground groups”, Macaragg said, generally talking about the environment they're operating in. “Yes, there is a grey area”.
Despite political trouble, however, the work for soldiers has proved certain. The main option here is just presence”, he says.
Over the past 20 years and with the 25 rotations of NATO troops, the “situation has improved greatly at the tactical level”, he says.
I think there's still work to be done. There must be political solutions. It must be achieved between Kosovo and Serbia”, he says.
As part of KFOR, there are currently about 600 American soldiers.
