Chernobyl hero relates how he saved Europe from nuclear desolation

Currently he resides in a modest house, with two rooms on the outskirts of Kiev.

Alexei Ananenko modestly says that he is not a hero.

I never felt like a hero. It was my task”, states the 59-year-old media, the former engineer, who risked his life in 1986 in an accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, located about 60 miles [100 km] from his home.

In one of the most tragic episodes, the HBO television minister tells the story of Ananenko and two other engineers, Valeri Bespalov and Boris Baranov, who came down to the heart of Chernobyl's burning reactor to empty the water tank that stood at about three feet [3 m] deep to prevent the desolating of Europe.

On the screen, the three men aware of the imminent danger volunteered for this mission to avoid a tragedy, millions of deaths, which would cause a second explosion that could be caused by contacting the nuclear fuel with the water tank.

In reality, although fear of a second explosion was expected, the intensity of the spread was not clear.
