Students were seen falling from the building in the western city of Suri, while black smoke came out of the windows.
Most of the victims were teenagers. The original cause of the fire was not immediately clear.
At least 20 others were seriously injured and are being treated at the hospital in GGujarati.
“The students lost their lives due to fire, but also because they were thrown out of the” building, Deepak Saptali, a local fire official, told AFP.
All the dead were under 20 years of age.
