May's resignation came after British MPs refused to vote in favour of its Brexit agreement in three cases.
But who are the favorites who can replace Theresa May?
Former Minister of Internal Affairs Boris Johnson is seen as the main favourite. He has been nominated by former Defence Minister Gavin Williams and conservative deputy Johnny Mercer.
Jonson was among the most popular faces that pushed forward Britain's EU exit campaign. He is thought to have 40% chance of taking over the leadership of the country.
The other names mentioned are that of Minister for Brexit Dominic Rab, with a probability of 14% taking over the country's leadership.
The other candidates are Andrera Leadsom, who is former British Prime Minister and Jeremy Hunt former British Foreign Affairs Minister.
To have a correct race, at least three candidates will have to announce their caditure for prime minister.
The race will take place in two stages.
In the first phase, candidates are required to be ruling party deputies. Then it is required that at least two other party deputies support his candidacy.
All candidates must hold a series of debates indicating their plans for governance. MPs then vote in several rounds of candidates. The candidate who gets at least votes in each round is eliminated, until only two remain.
In the second phase, all party members vote on one of the candidates they seem to have deserved.
It is expected that the race will accelerate and the new candidate will be voted in July so that the new prime minister will have as long as he faces the challenges the country is expected to face in terms of Brexit.
