It all started with a video posted on social media, writes Associates Press. A 2002 secret census, apparently showing a local oligarch giving a cash envelope to an associate of Milo Djukanovic, the leader of Montenegro.
The prominent businessman, Dusko Knezevic, former friend of Djukanovic, published the video late last year in retaliation for charges brought against him for money laundering, which forced him to flee to London to avoid prosecution.
He also made public a series of documents accusing the president and his ruling party of corruption, nepotism and abuse of office. What is now known as the “Zarfi” issue has triggered numerous protests in Montenegro, where collectors demand Djukanovic's resignation, which has been in power for about 30 years, broadcast kp.
Anti-government demonstrations in Montenegro come as similar protests are being held in neighbouring Serbia and Albania, where demonstrators call for the resignation of leaders they accuse of autocratic rule and corruption, despite their promises that they will lead these countries to the EU.
