While Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj has insisted that the tax will be lifted only when Serbia recognises Kosovo state, President Hashim Thaci in the interview for the British Independent newspaper speaks of his meetings he has so far had with his Serbian counterpart in Brussels.
Mr. Vuciq has definitely changed, mainly because he's been through hard times because of his mistakes. The regime he once belonged to was bad, a regime that did a lot of damage not only to Kosovo, Bosnia and Croatia, but also Serbia itself. Vuciq is a very difficult person to negotiate, to make dialogue. But I have not chosen him as my counterpart, he has not chosen me as his counterpart, is the reality of these two sovereign states”, Thaci said.
He has even commented on Serbian opposition protests against President Aleksandar Vuciq.
In 1998 and 99, Vuciq and I were in opposition. We won, he lost. However, he is a legitimate leader. Leaders in Kosovo and Serbia were voted in by citizens. We have all changed in a positive way, we must evolve. Now we don't talk about war and conflict, but we talk about achieving peace. There have been recent demonstrations in Serbia, and there is the danger that they might fear Vuciq for reaching an agreement, but we do not hope. Unfortunately, there will always be those who oppose peace”, he stressed.
Speaking of the Special founded in The Hague in 2017, which is investigating allegations of alleged war crimes, President Thaci insists there is nothing to fear.
We will not be ashamed, we will face, and I am convinced that we will overcome it with dignity and integrity. I am personally very proud to be one of the leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army. There will always be voices trying to denigrate Kosovo or accuse Kosovo, tarnish Kosovo and me personally. But that doesn't mean I have any hesitation in what is our way forward and how we should move forward. I believe in justice. What we should not allow to happen is for the story to be rewritten”, he said.
