This country's president, Maithruipala Sisisrena, has said he has used an emergency law to impose this restriction from Monday.
His office has said that from now on any clothing is forbidden that “cannot identify” so national security is guaranteed.
However, nibes and burka, used by Muslim women, are not specifically mentioned.
Sri Lanka continues to be in emergency condition for eight days after Islamist attackers have targeted churches and hotels on the day Easter is celebrated.
Tens of suspects have been arrested, but local officials have warned that more militants are on the run.
