On February 10th 2006, Fatmir Sejdiu was elected president of the Republic of Kosovo. He was elected to the position of president, following three rounds of voting in the Kosovo Assembly.
However, after several years, several Parliament deputies had opened the issue of holding two posts on the part of former President Sejdiu, then both president and president of the Democratic League of Kosovo.
On June 25th 2010, it was former President Naim Rrustemi, who had initiated the issue, respectively.
On September 24, 2010, the Constitutional Court of Kosovo had found that Fatmir Sejdiu had seriously violated the Kosovo Constitution”, respectively, its Article 88.2, It says Periscope. The court had found that the violation had to do with keeping the office of president of the Republic and chairman of the Democratic League of Kosovo unilaterally voting in the Constitutional Court.
A few days until it discusses what Sejdiu's response would be, or his action on the Constitutional decision, he had called the media conference, where he would also announce his resignation.
So Sejdiu resigns on September 27, 2010.
What had Sejdiu declared at that news conference?
Sejdiu had claimed to have been convinced that holding two positions did not amount to violations of the Constitution, but anyway he said he respected the Constitutional Court's decision.
Dear Kosovo Republic citizens. Today I have resigned from the position of president of the Republic of Kosovo. Since February 10th 2006, as president of the Republic of Kosovo and of all its citizens, I have exercised this position with responsibility, full devotion and a clean conscience, always having the interest of our beloved citizens and our beloved country as a fundamental guide. I, for the rest of my life, have respected institutions that come out of the free vote of citizens. I have worked to realize the political will of the people of Kosovo for freedom and independence and have led the process of independence of our country” with full responsibility, Sejdiu said. I have believed that maintaining the post of LDK chairman, not exercising that post, as the Constitution defines, is not a violation of this constitution. However, the Constitutional Court has thought differently and I respect that decision, despite the fact that I have not yet been handed over to the court's plea act”, Fatmir Sejdiu had declared. /Periscopi/
