The official results in local elections seem to have led President Recep Tayyip Erdoan, who dominated Turkish politics for nearly two decades. His party has decided to appeal the outcome to Istanbul, which has led to the postponement of the final result until next week.

Turkey's election board head, Sadi Guven, said during the day that appeals were made in the mayoral elections in 30 cities, meaning that the final results are not expected until April 11th, the Albanian translation Periscope.

Tensions have increased greatly in the country as unofficial preliminary results for Sunday's elections give the opposition CHP victory in cities including Ankara, the capital and Istanbul, which is the country's cultural and commercial centre.

The result reached by the opposition was a major surprise for the ruling party, despite the major economic crisis that has plagued the country.

Mansur Yavas in the CHP capital managed to secure 50.9 per cent of the vote, leaving Erdogan's AKP candidate far behind with 47.1 per cent. The AKP has said it will appeal that result as well.

The final result is expected to be published for Istanbul as well, where the official vote was suspended more than once while displaying the leadership of Ekrem Imamoglu of the CHP.

The candidate for Istanbul was former Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, who admitted that Imamoglu had 25 thousand more votes but said the CHP was leading more than 300 thousand invalid votes. His party will contest the outcome in all 39 Istanbul districts, the Hurriyet newspaper reported.

Both parties have declared the victory, with Imamoglu calling himself Istanbul's chairman on his official website.

While the AKP secured more than 50 per cent of the vote in the country, the opposition's victories come even despite the strong support of pro-government media. /Periscopi
