The Pentagon is expected to send about 300 additional troops to the border with Mexico, including approximately 100 cooks, who would prepare food by violating past policy, avoiding contact with troops with immigrants. The move is the latest sign of an increasing role of American military support for President Donald Trump's political immigration policies.
Earlier this month, Trump said he would have to mobilise more armies at the US border with Mexico, following hearing stories of migrants crossing the border from people attending a republican fundraiser.
The Pentagon has earlier said there were no plans to engage US forces to interact with immigrants, as this task belonged to border agents dealing with illegal immigration.
Besides the cooks, the Pentagon is expected to send 160 drivers and 20 lawyers, said Pentagon spokesman Charlie Summers, forwards Top Channel.
“We'll have some of our bodies serving food, so they'll come in contact with the immigrants”, Summers said. He said it was a “changing current policy”.
Currently there are about 5,000 active troops and troops of the National Guard near the border, though this number is being moved. Recently, there has been growing concern for the military, which is playing a growing role on the border with Mexico.
