KKUK's Oncology Clinic Director Ilir Kurtishi has told “Zerin” that the brahirapy device exists for several years, but its functionality is expected to take place this year. Because of the malfunction, patients have also been forced to seek treatment abroad.
The “has not worked, because there has been a lack of additional parts, infrastructure, license equipment and a lack of adequate staff training. We hope that this year we will start with brahirapy. Patients have all accomplished it abroad, all compensated for it by the Ministry of Health. It is by law that radiation treatment forms that are not done in Kosovo are amended to receive recommendation for treatment abroad. The number of patients needing brahirapy in Kosovo is about 30 or 40 women per year”, he said.
And when this device comes into operation Kurtish said they'd need extra staff.
“We need middle staff and we need staff if we drop the brahirapy device, at least for two or three specialists who would enable the best functioning of this service”, he said.
