U.S. Army spokesman Sean Robertson has said that American assets have been used to support the Syrian return operation of 110 Kosovars.
The “Assets of the United States are used to support the Syrian return operation of 110 Kosovars. The United States at no moment has claimed responsibility for the alleged detainees as foreign terrorist fighters”, Robertson said, refusing to provide further details for security reasons.
More than 300 Kosovo citizens have gone to Syria since 2012, and 70 men who fought as members of terrorist groups have been killed.
Kosovo authorities announced that among the returnees are four fighters, 32 women and 74 children, nine of whom do not have one parent.
The four fighters were immediately arrested, and the state's procurement announced that charges would be filed against them in a short time.
Kosovo police said 30 Kosovo fighters, 49 women and eight children still remain in the conflict zone. We will not stop until we bring every citizen of the Republic of Kosovo back to his country and anyone who committed any crime or who was part of these terrorist organisations will face justice”, Justice Minister Abelard Tahiri said.
Local and international security agencies had earlier warned of the danger posed by returning fighters to their homeland. In 2015, Kosovo adopted the law that made participation in foreign conflicts punishable by 15 years in prison.
The United States has positively assessed the return of Kosovars from Syria and has called for other states to do the same.
