“Herlind Kasner, the Chancellor's mother, died”, the government spokesman said without specifying other details.
German media reported that Herlind Kasner, a Latin and English-language professor, was always discrete and she died in early April at the age of 90.
Herlind Kasner was born in Hamburg in 1954 before going to eastern Germany with her husband, Horst Kazner, the father of the Chancellor. He died in 2011.
Chancellor Merkel has been called since 1977, when she married Ulrich Merkel, from whom she later divorced, but kept his last name.
Angela Merkel is currently in Brussels, at a summit of leaders of the European Union discussing the rise of Great Britain from the Union.
