The European Union announced last year that it was creating a European Travel Information and Authorisation System, or ETIAS, which would require “review before travel for security risks and migration of travellers benefiting from visa-free access to the Schengen area”.
The Schengen area is an area of 26 European countries that have no internal borders and allow people to move freely, including countries such as Spain, France, Greece, Germany, Italy and Poland.
Currently, US citizens can travel to Europe up to 90 days without any travel authorization, while ETIAS will change that.
Visa-free travelers, including US citizens, will have to request E authorisation TIAS before visiting the Schengen Zone.
They can fill an app and pay a 7 euro (about $8, U.S.) service fee online, while authorisation will be valid for three years.
The completion of online application should not take more than 10 minutes with automatic approval given in over 95% of cases, the European Commission said in a statement.
The United States has a similar system called the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation, or ESTA.
“We are aware of the European Union's plan to implement its travel-like information and authorisation system, similar to US ESTA, to contribute to a more efficient management of EU external borders and improve internal security”, a US State Department official said in a statement.
Each country has the right to set its own standards for entry. ”
The official, who according to CNN, has not received identity, has added that <x0 authorisation E TIAS is not a visa. ”
The United States will not be the only country affected by changes.
Since 2021, citizens from 60 countries will be required to apply for ETIAS before entering the Schengen Zone.
Brazil, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, Israel and Mauritius are among those countries.
European Parliament agreed to create ETHIAS in July. At the time, Dimitris Avramopoulos, European Commissioner for Migration, Internal Affairs and Citizenship, indicated that the requirement was set for security reasons.
“The new ETIAS will ensure that we no longer have an information gap for visa-free travellers,”, he said in a statement.
“Whoever poses the risk of migration or security will be identified before travelling to the EU limit”. /Warn.net/
