Wessel: Nothing major has been done in Kosovo without her wives' contribution

The head of the Republic of Kosovo's Parliament, Kadri Veselin, today, in marking the 30th anniversary of the March 23rd 1989 demonstrations with the initial women and Balave girls at Ferizaj, has said these demonstrations were the first sparks of a massive national awake in Kosovo against violent constitutional changes. Wessel said that in the year [...]
Wessel said that in 1989, until the wind of freedom was swelling in other parts of the communist world, Kosovo was facing a vicious aggression by Serbian chauvinist nationalism.
While our national aspirations were advancing Kosovo's political status, Serbia wanted to deprive us of the autonomy we had gained in 1974, after 30 years of oppression and discrimination under the Titan Yugoslavia. The big confrontation with Serbia was beginning. All of Kosovo was about to rise. And the first were raised Kosovo mothers. You stood up, with courage and a sense of sacrifice to say no to Serb aggression over Kosovo“, Chief Prime Minister Wessel stressed.
He said this voice spread throughout Kosovo, to every city and village, to young and old, to workers and intellectuals, to students and miners.
Therefore, as we remember those days of courage and resistance, we are proud of the fact that those heroes' dream of free Kosovo has come true. The defeat and sacrifice of Kosovo's men and women today lies at the foundation of Kosovo's independent and sovereign state of“, Veselin said.
Following his speech, the Speaker of the Assembly said that in two decades of freedom, great things have been achieved as a nation, above all, Kosovo is already an independent and sovereign state.
But, he added, it is already time for facing new challenges, such as empowering the state and economic development.
The head of the Assembly said how 30 years ago, even today Kosovo women should be where they decide for the future, where they decide for the state and society, in politics, in business, in education, health and culture.
“One thing is certain: without women, Kosovo will not be able to move forward, because our story teaches us that nothing big has been done in Kosovo without the contribution of its women“, Chief Prime Minister Veselin stressed.
