The physicist was also a communist deputy in the lower House of Parliament.
Alferov has shared the Nobel Prize for physics in 2000 for his work on semi-referencers and laser technology.
Alferov was honoured for technology innovations, which are now used in everything, on satellites as well as cell phones.
He had shared the Nobel Prize with German scientist Herbert Kromer and Jack Kilby from the United States. /rel
