Former President of the United States George W. Bush, told young American citizens at a naturalisation ceremony that <x0migration is the blessing and strength”, despite complicated policies.

Bush and former First LadyLaura Bush spoke to 51 people from more than 20 states at a ceremony in Dallas, Texas.

He told the group that he hopes the “s responsible in Washington will calm rhetoric, set aside politics and modernise migration laws”.

Comments come at the time of a deep US debate on migration policies.

President Donald Trump has pledged to take measures against both legal and illegal migration, saying he wants people to migrate on the basis of a merit system.

Bush, the Republican as well as Trump, has been largely out of political debate since the end of the mandate in 2009.

He called for, as he said, the reform of outdated and inefficient “laws --” migration and said “borders are not arbitrary and must be respected”.

Bush told young Americans that they are joining a troubled <x0-democracy” and urged them to participate in it and vote.

Trump, among other things, has pledged to build a long wall on the border with Mexico, to prevent the entry of illegal migrants into the US./etema/
