Peter Tabichi is a teacher of mathematics and physics who gave him 80 percent of his salary to help poor students in Pannonia, a village that faces drought and hunger, and where nearly a third of children are orphans or just one parent.
Tabichi, 36, was selected from 10,000 candidates from 179 countries for the award, led by actor Hughes Jackman, the AP reports.
The award was created by the Varkey Foundation in Dubai.
