Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan has once again said that it is the last time the former church Aya Sofia in Istanbul -- currently a museum -- will become a mosque.
Erdogan has repeated this stance once again during a television show at the Haber” saying it's time for Ayja Sofia to become a mosque.
Erdogan has stated that the transformation of the church into the museum has been a big mistake”.
“The status of the museum will be lifted. We're going to call Ayja Sophia mosque”, Erdogan said, I follow Periscope.
The Byzantine church, then known as St. Sofia, was built in 537 and converted to mosque during the Ottoman Empire in 1453.
During the time of Kemal Ataturk, who attended secularist politics in Turkey, Ayja Sofia became a museum in 1935. Aya Sofia is among the cultural heritage facilities protected by U NESTO.
