Abrashi calls for minimum wage growth

The minimum wage in Kosovo continues to be the lowest in the region. It has even been praised as discriminatory, especially after public sector increases. An initiative to raise the minimum wage had also received former Labour and Social Management Minister (MPMS), Arba Abashi, but never concreteised.

He says the minimum wage has had to be addressed long ago.

Abrashi says that on this issue and the conclusion of all procedures were done during his mandate as MPCS minister, after he said they then agreed to the minimum wage wage agreed on by the private sector, the public sector and business representatives.

The minimum wage has to be increased or better said is to be treated long ago. During my term as a minister, we have completed all procedures to raise the minimum wage in Consultation with the Economic Council- Social and we also talked to business representatives outside the Economic Council- Social and we agreed with a amount I'm not mentioning now, but that there was a amount that even the private sector, the public sector and business representatives have agreed on, and it's been a lot that can be implemented”, Abrashi said.

In this interview, Abrashi says workers have remained without proper treatment and without the attention of state institutions.

He says the burden of responsibility for the issue is the prime minister and the finance ministry, which must give the green light. He has asked the coalition to work harder on this category.

“I regret that this issue has not been addressed for nearly two years, and a large number of workers have remained untreated and without receiving due attention from state institutions. I hope that the Ministry of Labour and Social Management (MPMS) and the Finance Ministry (MF) will react as soon as possible and find an optimum solution in order to affect that category as well. The country's prime minister and the finance ministry bear the burden because they must give the green light and the coalition must work harder for this body”, Abrashi has said.

Days ago, Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj has said that increasing the minimum wage in the country is one of the necessary actions that directly affect the welfare of our citizens.

He has asked Minister of Labour and Social Management Skender Recica to immediately reactivate the Social Economic Council, in order to start discussing the minimum wage in the country. /EO/
