According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Regional Development in Kosovo, crops in 30 municipalities over the past year reached 74 thousand hectares, but local farmers warn that only 20 percent of the amount has been able to cover the needs of the population, reports “OrraNews”.
Although the land in the country is considered very productive, it is estimated that climate conditions have reduced its productivity by even damaging the quality of wheat.
According to the chairman of the Union Federation of Farmers, Tahir Tahiri, based on recent developments, the country risks a bread supply crisis unless authorities seriously think about coping.
The “is neither expected next year with as much as 20% of the wheat needs”, Tahiri said.
Meanwhile, official statistics show that Kosovo follows to import significant amounts of wheat for domestic use, mainly from Serbia, the country from which imports last year alone reached over 130 thousand tonnes.
