While staying in the US, on Tuesday he has held a conversation at “Cuncil on Foreign Reviews” in Washington, DC, where prior to an audience of regional specialists has talked about efforts to reach a peace agreement between Kosovo and Serbia.
He has said that Kosovo will not make agreements that the US accepts. But it added that “if a slight correction of the border is the price for final peace agreement, this should be acceptable”.
The comprehensive peace agreement between Kosovo and Serbia will bring peace to Kosovo, peace and stability in the region and will have a transformation role in our society”, President Thaci said, his office reports.
He has said it will not be an easy process to reach the agreement between Kosovo and Serbia, but it is the only way forward to avoid returning to tensions and conflicts, Koha.net broadcasts. The head of state stressed that the main purpose of the agreement is to recognise Kosovo from Serbia and to membership Kosovo in the United Nations.
“Explaining why the circumstances are favourable for a comprehensive agreement between Kosovo and Serbia, President Thaci said that this time Serbia seems interested in the agreement with Kosovo, while Russia also appears ready to accept an agreement that would be reached between Kosovo and Serbia”, the announcement said.
Meanwhile, speaking of the role of the United States of America, President Thaci said Washington's support is vital to Kosovo.
“How many times Kosovo has been with the United States, has triumphed. Even if the compromises made seemed serious at first, it was later shown to have been the best strategic decisions”, President Thaci said.
“The United States' support for the peaceful agreement between Kosovo and Serbia is vital for Kosovo. We will not accept an agreement that is not acceptable even to Washington”, he added.
In this conversation, President Thaci has also received questions from the audience.
James Pardew, American diplomat and one of the US representatives for Kosovo in 1999-2001, asked the border correction issue.
In his response, President Thaci said one of the points of the comprehensive peace agreement between Kosovo and Serbia will certainly be the demarcation of the border between Kosovo and Serbia.
“One of the points will be demarcation of the border between Kosovo and Serbia”, President Thaci said, and added that “this is the opportunity to correct both the border in northern Kosovo and south of Serbia”.
“If a slight correction of the border is the price for final peace agreement, then it would have to be acceptable”, he said.
However, strategic points such as Lake Weman, the entire city of Mitrovica, Trepca, are non-negotiable resources”, claimed President Thaci.
Other participants have also asked about economic development and reforms in Kosovo, which President Thaci stressed are successful stories, but that their successful continuation depends on the creation of political stability.
