The new name, Republic of Northern Macedonia, has entered into force with the publication of constitutional changes in the Official Journal. Earlier, Greece through a letter has announced Skopje with the Greek Parliament's decision to adopt the protocol for the membership of the northern neighbour in the Atlantic Alliance. Macedonian authorities have announced that on Wednesday at the border crossing with Greece, the first sign to be placed with the inscription “Republic of Northern Macedonia” will be placed.
The government on the website has also changed the data, starting for the first time with the use of the new name, Northern Macedonia.
Prime Minister Zoran Zaev after gathering his Social Democrat party chairmanship on Tuesday evening called on all institutions to change the inscriptions, while the Ministry of Internal Affairs starts even with changing travel documents and car license plates.
According to a government decision, by the beginning of 2020, the first bank notes under the new name will also be released. The process of replacing them will last up to five years, as will the citizen's personal documents.
The agreement between Greece and North Macedonia on resolving the dispute was reached on 17 June 2018. The two countries have spent a long, tense period until the ratification of the agreement by their parliaments.
Greece had been blocking for 27 years the efforts of Northern Macedonia for membership in NATO and the European Union, due to claims that its neighbour has territorial claims on its northern region bearing the name Macedonia.
Following the adoption of the protocol for NATO membership, Northern Macedonia in June expects the opening of negotiations with Brussels for membership in the European Union.
