The insects of this world are going missing and thus threatening the catastrophic “of nature ecosystems”, says the first global scientific report on the issue.
More than 40% of insect species are declining in their numbers, and a third are being endangered, this analysis finds. The rate of extinction is eight times faster than that of mammals, birds, and reptiles. The total mass of insects is dropping by 2.5% per year, according to the best available data, suggesting that they would disappear completely within this century.

The planet is at the beginning of the sixth massive extinction in its history, with already reported losses of large animals that are easier to study. But insects are far apart, and it is harder to know when they disappear. They are essential to the proper functioning of all ecosystems.
Finally, insect collapses have reported Germany and Puerto Rico, but this research finds that the crisis is actually global. /Periscope
