The German newspaper “Welt am Sonntag” wrote that in Germany there has been great increase in the number of cyber attacks on important public infrastructure, such as the electricity network and water supply system.
Citing data from the Federal Agency for Cyber Security, the paper has said that during the second part of 2018 alone, 157 cyber attacks by hackers on companies responsible for significant infrastructure sectors have occurred in Germany. That number is huge compared to the 145 attacks that took place throughout 2017.
These attacks are intended to block the power supply and prevent the flow of water through pipes. Security authorities suspect foreign intelligence agencies are behind these attacks.
German and European authorities are concerned about weak infrastructure security provisions and election intervention by countries like Russia, China and far-right groups.
Germany is currently making plans to secure the next generation network, 5G, writes “Reuters”. /Periscopi/
