“US to request Security Council meeting for North Korea”

At least eight countries in the 15-member Security Council called for a meeting on human rights abuses in North Korea on Tuesday, but the final decision is in Washington, diplomats said.

The State Department has instructed the United States Mission to the United Nations to propose holding a debate on North Korea at the UN Security Council this week, including broad talks on recent developments in the Korean Peninsula, as well as the latest missile concessions and the possibility of a provocation of North Korea”, an American official said.

The meeting would come at a time of increasing tension between Washington and Pyongyang.
