So told a conference organised by HANDICOS, on the occasion of International Day of Persons with Limited Skills.
In this case again, institutions were called upon to enforce the rights of disabled children and to have them involved in local and national policy agendas.
Eldin Gashi from the Children's Association Group “Hena” has talked about the barriers facing disabled children, who he said continue to be prejudiced into society.
Being a child with limited capacity in Kosovo is dealing with several barriers, such as physical access, education, health, prejudice and discrimination for friends or other people. To that end, to overcome these barriers, we within Handikos formed a group that we called the Moon Group. The Monday group has a mission that is guaranteeing the rights of disabled children”, Gashi said.
HANDICOS Director Africa Maliqi said this day focuses on raising awareness, senbilising society that concerns the rights of disabled people.
“are the three main triggers who exclude disabled persons from society or their participation in society. First, there is the prejudice against disabled people who cause fear, complexity, and isolation, where families isolate themselves and close down. The second factor is the elusive infrastructure, which does not create equal opportunities for all other citizens to participate in the political, cultural and competitive field. Also, the third cause is legislation, which either does not take on the rights of persons with limited abilities or does not apply them. We in Kosovo have some laws that deal with disabled persons, but unfortunately not all those laws are implemented or implemented in part, but there are also laws that are not implemented at all, and that shows where Kosovo is today in relation to disabled erytons”, he said.
According to him, there are numerous shortages of various services, law enforcement, and immediate infrastructure that discriminate people with limited ability in relation to others.
While, James Mugayu from the UNICEF Office in Kosovo called for all involvement in society.
We support each aspect of society to be inclusive in a social way, we stand fully in support of the international convention for persons, as today as we have come to mark this international day, U n NICEF calls on this convention to be respected and to become appropriate actions in terms of all involvement in society, and social cultural development in terms of respecting the rights of disabled people. We want to attempt access to all public spaces, where all buildings should be accessible to disabled persons. In this way they too are offered the opportunity to help and contribute to society. In this form we can give them a platform to express their view of”, he said.
Besides presenting the situation of disabled people, HANDICOS has also shown an awareness video on children's rights with limited skills and the involvement of persons with limited capacity in the country.
Conference completed with the “exhibition Stick Up for Wow”- Women on Wall, which aims to empower women with limited abilities.
International Day of Restricted Persons has been initiated by the United Nations since 1992, with the goal of raising awareness of the involvement of disabled persons in political, social, economic and cultural life
