Berlin proclaims climate emergency

“We have suggested that we want to go beyond our current goals, to lower carbon dioxide emissions by 85%, compared to 1990 levels”, said Berlin Mayor Michael Mueller.
Senator Regina Gwenther, who heads the Environment Department in the Senate and drafted the decision, wanted to include a goal of at least 95% before 2050, but could not secure approval.
With this decision, Berlin follows the footsteps of many municipalities worldwide, including about 50 in Germany, which have declared climate emergencies. / A T S/
