A judge ordered his release after the Supreme Court ruled that convicted criminals go to prison only if they have broken the appeals options.
He was received by supporters outside the prison in the town of Curiiba, where he was held for a year and a half accused of corruption.
The former president led Brazil between 2003 and 2010 and remains popular.
He was the favorite to win last year's presidential election, but was imprisoned after being involved in a major corruption scandal. The race was won by extreme right candidate Jair Bolsonaro.
