In view of retaliation, Palestinian militants threw missiles at Israel.
This is the second day of a escalation of cross-border violence, after Israel killed a senior commander of the Islamic Jihad, an Iranian-backed Palestinian militant group.
Israel said Baha Abu Al-Atta had carried out a series of cross-border attacks and was planning more.
An Israeli missile attack also targeted the home of a Islamic Jihad official in Damascus, killing two people, according to Syrian state media. Islamic Jihad said the objective was the home of political leader Akram Al-Ayuri.
In response, militants fired some 200 missiles in Israel throughout the day. Further Israeli air strikes on the militant group's targets in Gaza killed eight Palestinians.
Hamas, the main militant group running the Gaza Strip, is apparently standing out of combat.
The UN's envoy for the Middle East has headed towards Cairo to begin mediation, so that violence is put to an end, a diplomatic source told Reuters.
