Two people have died, seven have disappeared, 35 were injured, and more than 100 houses have been destroyed by fires spread on Australia's eastern coast by drought, officials said on Saturday.
New South Wales State Prime Minister Gladys Bereyklian told reporters that the number of victims could increase throughout the day, Kosovo reports.
It says that the conditions of the fire have been unprecedented “with more than 70 fires still burning throughout the country, with at least five declared in a state of emergency.
Unfortunately, what we saw yesterday (Friday) were unprecedented conditions of fire. Today, there are more than 70 fires burning throughout the country (New South Wales), more than 40 uncontrolled, and at least five at the emergency level”.
But what has been tragic over the past few days is the confirmation that two lives have been lost, there are at least seven missing persons, and I regret to say that the number can rise during the day. Our thoughts and prayers, of course, go to the families and loved ones of those two deceased persons. I will ask the Fire Service Commissioner to provide further details on this. Forecasting weather conditions on Tuesday may mean that our situation will not deteriorate further”.
