The 48-year-old Australian is still struggling with the United States' request for his extradition from Britain on spying charges. If he were judged by American justice and convicted, he could be sentenced to 175 years in prison.
In the letter sent to British Interior Minister Priti Patel, doctors called for Assange to leave the prison “Belmarsh” in London and be sent to a university hospital.
They supported their appreciation for Australian health in the confessions of witnesses to the court on 21 October and in the November 1st report of Neils Melzer, special United Nations rapporteur for torture.
Independent United Nations expert had said that Assange is still being exposed to arbitrary behavior and abuse, which may soon cost life.
We are writing this open letter as doctors to express our deep concern for Julian Assange's physical and mental health, said in a 16-page letter written by doctors of various states, including the United States, Australia, Britain, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Poland and Sri Lanka.
Assange had used the “WikiLeaks” page to publish classified military and diplomatic data for the U.S. bombings in Afghanistan and Iraq, writes the “The Guardian”, broadcast the Express.
