Land slides took place mainly in Chiba, east of Tokyo, and in the Fukushima region. These countries were hit by the third storm of rain within six weeks. In some parts of Japan, rain fell for a typical month in half.
Authorities have issued orders for evacuation in the region hit by this month's typhoon. In the town of Usquau, rain rained an estimated 283 mm in just 12 hours. Although the storm left Japan's territory on Saturday morning, hundreds are still staying in temporary shelters. Some train and bus services are not yet functional.
Japan's prime minister, Shinzo Abe, held an emergency meeting with the disaster task force on Saturday, calling for maximum efforts to carry out successful rescue operations and assess the damage caused.
Authorities warned that the country could be hit by floods and other landslides in the eastern and central part. Otherwise, at least 88 people died and more than 300 others were injured by the typhoon two weeks ago, writes the Guardian”.
