His brother Joe told BBC News that he was one of the most important mathematicians of the 20th century.
Atiyah was also former president of the Royal Society, one of the highest honours a British scientist can receive.
The current president of the Royal Society, Venki Ramakrishnan, described it as an excellent mimatician.
Attyah was known for developing a math branch called topology theory “K” and index theory “Atyah-Singer”.
