What is said in the new pre-mature of Macedonia's Constitution

Macedonia's Parliament adopted constitutional changes that enable the change of its name to Northern Macedonia, under the agreement with Greece.

Eighty-one MPs in the 120-seat parliament voted for constitutional amendments, first and only four amendments dealing with change of name, with preamble, with citizenship, state care for the diaspora, and then constitutional law or package of constitutional changes. Opposition party V MPs MRO- The DPMNE, which opposes the agreement, boycotted the vote.

The parliamentary majority reached the two-thirds necessary vote after an afternoon agreement between Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and opposition Movement leader Besa, whose two lawmakers had a key role in meeting the necessary majority for these changes.

Prime Minister Zaev and the Albanian party agreed that in the new constitution, the definition of the citizenship term will use two “Macedonian and civic appointments of the Republic of Northern Macedonia”. For Albanians, there will be an explanation for their ethnic affiliation. Personal IDs will also include the citizens' declaration according to their ethnic affiliation.
