America is adding pressure on the Haradinaj government to remove the tax Kosovo has imposed on products imported from Serbia.
This threat by Washington is deepening the crisis, even open in the ruling coalition between Hashim Thaci's followers on one side and Ramush Haradinaj's camp on the other.
But what is behind this game of tax is the border between those who are pro or against a final Albanian-Serbian agreement in exchange for territory and population. Without formally saying, the Trump administration is calling this solution an American interest supported by Brussels officials. Unconfirmed diplomatic voices told Laps.al that any Albanian, Kosovo, or Serbian politician who would become an obstacle to a border reform agreement would be put on American black lists.
But the game isn't just one direction. The strongest EU state, Germany and the large Britain to come out of it have voiced opposition to this solution that would open the pandoran box in the Western Balkans.
Many in Pristina claim that following Haradinaj's decision, for putting on a patriotic note tax that sparked the bloods of all natives, there was official Berlin, which at any cost calls for non-resulting a Thaci- Vucic agreement.
Apparently, the Putin- Vucic-Tec line, which has managed to secure a powerful lobby in Washington, aims to do the opposite -- conclude an agreement in exchange of territories.
That's what today's movement in which Washington requires immediate tax removal: “Actions that undermine Dialogue, obstacles from the side, and refusal to suspend tariffs go against US interests” are said to be an ultimatum on paper.
Will Ramush Haredinaj back after this? Will he be able to withstand such great pressure when he opposes half the government and at the same time the world's most powerful state? That's why you can't bet.
But one thing is clear, it is not about the withdrawal that would turn Hradinaj into a puppet prime minister, but it would also mark the collapse of those forces that oppose the partition of Kosovo. Because behind the tax game there's a much bigger challenge.
The United States of America fully supports dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia led by the European Union, the United States Embassy of America's Community in Kosovo said.
A comprehensive and mutually beneficial agreement is in the strategic interest of the United States.
As President Trump communicated in his letter to President Thaci: “I urge you and the leaders of Kosovo to use this unique moment, speak in a unified voice during peace talks, and refrain from actions that may make it more difficult to reach a” agreement.
Some commentators and politicians suggested that Kosovo's status as an independent and sovereign state and roughly listed with the United States will protect it from all consequences of its decisions in the international arena.
We advise against assuming that Kosovo or any other United States friend can take actions that are against our strategic interests without facing the consequences for our bilateral relationship.
“Call the Heedars from Kosovo and others from the region to show commitment to normalisation, regional peace and stability and to moving along the path towards European integration.
We reiterate our view that an immediate suspension of the fee in imports from Serbia and Bosnia is a necessary measure to restore the moment in the dialogue process. We also expect other Heeders to take their constructive measures”, the US Embassy communiqué says.
As the new story has shown, Kosovo is successful when it joins from within and enters into partnership with the United States and the EU. We encourage all political parties to contribute constructively to this process.
Actions that undermine dialogue, marginal barriers and refusal to suspend tariffs all go against US interests.
What is needed now is a bold leadership to promote our common goals. This is what helps us maintain a strong bilateral relationship, says the US Embassy communiqué.
