A group of seven to nine men attacked the ship with fire M SC Mandy.
Pirates robbed the ship for two hours before they left and took six of the sailors aboard.
The Russian Embassy, quoting the Benin Navy, says that 26 persons were aboard the ship - 20 Russians, four Ukrainians, and two Georgians.
The attack reportedly occurred at midnight, about 55 miles from Cotonou, a large city south of Benin.
After the attack, ship M. SC Mandy headed to the port of Lagos and is expected to sail further to Cotonou, under the direction of a replacement crew.
The ship is currently anchored in Guinea Bay.
The area off the coast of Benin and neighboring Nigeria are considered high - risk waters.
Meanwhile, Russian diplomats in Nigeria and Benin are working to release captured sailors, reported RIA Novosti.
