According to the report, administration officials contacted Web about the possibility of appointment to the chief of the Pentagon.
Patrick Chanhahan, former chief executive of the Boeing Aircraft Company, is currently a frontman of the Secretary of Defense's duty.

Webb served as Secretary of the Navy under Republican President Ronald Reagan.

The White House has not commented on the report in New York Tennessee, while the newspaper said that Web has not responded to the request for comments.
