The 65-year-old member of the far-left communist group “Armed Proselytists for Communism” has been sentenced by Italian justice to two life sentences on charges of killing four people.
Following the escape from the Frozinone prison in 1981, Cesare Battist was first hiding in France, Mexico, and recently Brazil, where former Brazilian President Lula granted him the right to political asylum.
Italy has been demanding its extradition several times over, which has not been accepted by former Brazilian President Lula.
In October 2018 during the election campaign, then presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro declared that if elected, he would allow Cesare Batitist' extradition to Italy.
Shortly after Bolsonaro's victory, the Italian terrorist abandoned his apartment in Cananeia without a trace, along with his family and children.
Cesare Battist was arrested by a joint Interpol action with the participation of Italian Special Forces Police Agents. He was in disguise with a fake beard with sunglasses and walking free on a street in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
After arriving in Italy, Cesare Battist will serve his sentence in the Roman prison of Rebibia, in an isolated area of high security for terrorists. In the first six months, he will be in complete isolation from other prisoners.
This is an important moment for Italian justice, democracy and, above all, for the victims' families.
